From the Registrar
Welcome to the first edition of Registration Buzz for 2023.
This year is an important one for the Board as we approach a number of milestone dates. 2023 marks 50 years since the first meeting of the Board. This is an opportunity to promote our history and also celebrate and acknowledge the existing and emerging teachers, schools, students, parents, and other stakeholders in the story of the Teachers Registration Board.
A program of activities has been planned throughout the year, with an event marking the first meeting of the Board on the 16th of November being the most significant of all dates in the calendar.
Next year (2024) will also mark 50 years since the Board undertook work to establish teacher registration. Further activities on these important milestones will also be organised.
Autumn is now upon us with cooler days and much work to be done. This time of year sees the end of the very busy registration period for all teachers, and our Board staff, with the annual registration renewal period that opened in October (for teachers whose registration was due to expire) coming to a close.
As we move towards June and July, these are also busy months at the Board as we tackle the end of one financial year and the beginning of a new one.
Over March and April the Teachers Registration Board continued its consultation regarding the development of a proposed Code of Conduct that aims to complement existing site or employer codes. It is hoped that such a Code will be useful and valued by all involved within the teaching profession.
Views are also being sought from stakeholders about an important aspect of the Board’s work – ensuring the safety of children and young people who attend learning sites where South Australian registered teachers provide education and care. A roundtable event is scheduled in May to discuss this important topic, namely whether regulation 7(3) of the Regulations could be repealed to reduce red tape for teachers whilst still ensuring the highest commitment to child welfare and safety in South Australia.
As we look toward the second half of 2023, there is still much work to be done and we look forward to working with you all throughout 2023.
